Analytical Studies on the Structure and Emission of the SS433 Jets

We study the structure and emission of the SS 433 jets in the X-ray emitting region and in the inner and hotter portion inside the X-ray emitting region. In order to consider the jet structure from the inner to outer regions we develop the hybrid model combining the conical beam and the model beam whose cross section grows with the distance more slowly. We find that the jet beams in the inner and hotter portion are of two-temperature and emit a large amount of high energy gamma photons. Our analyses suggest the thick absorbing envelope to exist in the SS 433 system. Based on our results, we discuss the possible acceleration mechanism for the SS 433 jets.Comment: 15 pages. Literatuurstudie chrysant los van de grond : met specifieke aandacht voor de case MobyFlowers

De mogelijkheden van chrysantenteelt los van de grond worden al sinds de opkomst van substraatteelt in de jaren ‘70 onderzocht. De wens om los van de grond te komen wordt door meerdere drijfveren ingegeven. De belangrijkste drijfveer voor het ontwikkelen van de teeltsystemen sinds de jaren ’90 zijn de mogelijkheden om emissie van meststoffen en gewasbeschermingsmiddelen naar het grond- en oppervlaktewater te reduceren. Daarnaast spelen teelttechnische en bedrijfsorganisatorische aspecten: betere teeltsturing, uniformiteit, productieverhoging, ruimtebesparing en arbeidsbesparing. Toch is er nog geen rendabel systeem in de markt voor de chrysantenteelt op substraat. Deze literatuurstudie geeft een overzicht van de teeltsystemen en knelpunten, en daarmee een overzicht van ontwikkelingsrichtingen voor de chrysantenteelt los van de grond. Emissions of plant protection products from glasshouses to surface water in The Netherlands

Momenteel wordt een vast percentage van 0.1% gebruikt voor de emissie van gewasbeschermingsmiddelen vanuit kassen naar het oppervlaktewater. Metingsgegevens van waterschappen wijzen erop dat de emissie van gewasbeschermingsmiddelen en biociden naar het oppervlaktewater hoger zijn dan aangenomen wordt in de toelatingsprocedure. Dit rapport onderzoekt of nieuwe benaderingen nodig zijn. De onderzoeksresultaten duiden er op dat de werkelijke emissie sterk verschilt tussen verschillende gewassen, teeltsystemen en toedieningswijzen. System and climate related pythium problems in mobile chrysanthemum growing systems

One Dutch greenhouse company started to grow chrysanthemums in a mobile system. The system’s basic unit is a sub-irrigated V-shaped gully of 8.0 m long and 5 cm wide, filled with a peat-coir mix. The system is hampered by growth differences along the length profile of the gullies and Pythium related yield reductions of up to 10% during the summer period. A series of experiments aimed to mimic the problems, explain causes and to advice on improvements. A Pythium ultimum pathogen from the grower was cultured in the laboratory and disseminated in the irrigation water tanks. In part of the cultivations the plants were subjected to high temperature and low air humidity treatments aimed at creating stress and Pythium susceptibility. Various plugs fit for transporting rooted chrysanthemum cuttings were tested as well. The results show that Pythium ultimum is initially the result of a too high water content in the first 10 days of the propagation phase. In dit onderzoek hebben de auteurs zich specifiek gericht op het innovatievermogen van de technische toeleverende industrie binnen het glastuinbouwcluster – de kassenbouw, automatisering, klimaatsturing en installatie. Het rapport volgt twee sporen: een observatie van transitieprocessen in de toeleverende industrie, en een reflectie met ondernemers over R&D-strategieën en samenwerking. Attitudes and acceptance of South African urban consumers towards genetically modified white maize

The introduction of genetically modified (GM) food products to food markets around the world, has led to considerable controversy. In many cases consumer attitudes and perceptions of GM food products were revealed as fears, concern for, and avoidance of the new technology. The importance of GM foods in South Africa is increasing, even though the GM Food debate lags behind many other (often more developed) parts of the world. This paper investigates the knowledge, attitudes and acceptance of urban South African white-grain maize consumers regarding GM maize. Conjoint- and cluster analysis were used to develop clusters/market segments among the urban consumers of white maize. A range of additional questions was used to develop profiles of the identified market segments. These aspects covered demographics, GM knowledge aspects as well as GM attitude aspects. Four distinct clusters/market segments were identified with specific characteristics: "Anti-GM, Brand aware" cluster (35% of valid responses), "Brand unaware, Farmer sympathetic" cluster (20%), "GM consumer benefit, Brand aware" cluster (25%) and the "Brand aware, Pro-GM" cluster (20%). Innovatieve systemen halen teelten uit de grond

Het project “Teelt de grond uit” werkt daarom aan een radicale omslag. Met technologie uit de glastuinbouw worden nieuwe teeltsystemen voor vollegrondsteelten ontwikkeld en geïmplementeerd.
